Salad with an orca view

Salad with an orca view

The head of a sea asparagus was exactly what we were after. Half submerged by the low tide, crisp and pointy with a vibrant green of new growth.

Audrey, all the way from France, snaps off a tip and without hesitation pops it into her mouth. Her eyes wander as she evaluates the flavour. “Wow, so I can just eat this as a snack? I want a salad with tomatoes and cucumbers and…”

Suddenly a very distinct sound breaks her excitement. Paaaafffffffffffchhhhh. Nina, visiting Audrey from Toronto, gasps. She scans the ocean and her eyes fixate unto where the noise came from. “Look, look, look. There. Is that a whale?”

Another Paaaaaffffffcchhh.

A black dorsal fin glides out of the water, mist sparkling the air high above it, and then, two more.

A family of orcas is roaming through the Skookumchuck Narrows, no doubt following the salmon running through.

Simon, from Russia, with his wife Kristina, has an outstanding zoom on his Canon and begins flicking, clicking, and adjusting to capture the picturesque moment. We fall silent for nearly ten minutes as the whales pass by Earle Creek through the channel.

All is quiet until we hear a, “crunch, crunch, crunch” and turn to see Audrey happily munching on a new stalk of sea asparagus.
